Liverpool are apparently interested in RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, although any deal to capture the Croatian international could be futile due to his high price tag.

The Reds are admirers of the 21-year-old, who has established himself as one of Europe’s top young players this season, having played a major role in Croatia‘s march to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals and Leipzig‘s DFB Pokal success.

As a result, Gvardiol is one of the hottest properties on the market this summer, and Liverpool are interested in the defender. With a rumoured asking price of up to £85 million, it’s understandable why Jurgen Klopp‘s side isn’t pursuing the centre-back.

Liverpool’s fifth-place position and absence of UEFA Champions League funding have significantly limited the Reds’ summer purchasing capacity. As a result, signings must be carefully considered and meticulously managed, which means Gvardiol may be perceived as too risky a transaction.

Even if Liverpool really needed a central defender, few fans would think that spending up to £85 million on Gvardiol would be a sensible use of finances, despite the centre-back’s enormous talent. And this choice could be crucial as the summer progresses.

Liverpool will live to rue the loss of Gvardiol.
Liverpool made the correct option in not chasing Gvardiol due to Leipzig’s demands. But, as with Jude Bellingham, there will always be a sense of ‘what if’ with the Croat perhaps the best young defender in the world.

Liverpool, as we all know, are in need of a left-sided defender, and with Gvardiol the ideal signing for such a profile, the Reds may live to regret not going all out for the 21-year-old, whom Danny Mills described as ‘unbelievable’ through Sky Sports News.
