As the first two signings of the summer approach, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is confident that his team will be back in Premier League title contention next season
The Reds finished fifth in the 2022/23 season, securing a Europa League spot. One of their goals for next season is to reach the 2024 final in Dublin, the closest capital city to Liverpool. However, that will pale in comparison to the main goal Klopp will assign to his team.
Indeed, the recently concluded season will not be remembered fondly. Failure to mount a trophy challenge – nine league losses told their own story – as well as a tame exit from all three cup competitions hurt.
The drop-off was dramatic for a team that had finished just a few games short of the Quadruple the previous season.
However, plans are already in place to ensure that Liverpool can rise again.
Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner will all leave Anfield this summer, despite Klopp’s wishes.
With Arthur Melo also returning to Juventus, Liverpool has a fantastic opportunity to bolster their midfield options.
As a result, two early deals are gathering steam to kickstart the Merseysiders’ summer window.
First up, a move for Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister appears to be on the cards.
Liverpool are nearing a £69.4 million deal to bring the Argentine to Anfield. And, while the signing of the World Cup winner may not be as imminent as imagined, Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed he has played his final game for Brighton.
De Zerbi expects Mac Allister to leave, so Neves will join Liverpool.
De Zerbi confirmed Mac Allister’s likely departure in response to speculation linking him to Liverpool.
“I think that was Alexis and Moises [Caicedo’s] last game, I’m really sorry,” De Zerbi said after the game.
“They’re both great people and players.”
“Brighton’s policy is like this,” De Zerbi added. “I believe it is appropriate for them to be able to leave, change teams, and play at a higher level.
“We are prepared. We need to find other big players to replace Alexis and Moises.
“If you ask me about Caicedo and Mac Allister, I love them because they are two big, big players who can be in a big, big European team,” De Zerbi added.
“They can compete in every competition and are ready to compete for a big team, and I hope for them that they can play for the best team in the world.”
The signing of Mac Allister is expected to take place in early June, with the player’s father arriving for talks this week after details of his proposed Anfield move were leaked.
According to reports, Mac Allister will be joined at Anfield by Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.
The Portuguese star was expected to join Barcelona, but their lack of funds has created an opportunity for Liverpool.
Now it appears that a £50 million bid for the 26-year-old is gathering steam, with Wolves reportedly ready to accept.
Klopp is confident that Liverpool will win the Premier League in 2024.
Klopp is confident that Liverpool will return to title contention after a busy summer of signings.
And, in a warning to Manchester City, Arsenal, and others, Klopp believes his team will not perform as poorly in the future.
“There were times during the season when you thought, ‘This season is going to last four years,'” he said. “Thank God for the last 11 games; they gave us a real boost, a perspective, and a foundation for what we have to do.”
“That it didn’t turn out to be the best ever season, we see that, we know that, and we are very disappointed that we didn’t make it to the top four,” Klopp added.
“However, there were four teams that were better than us at certain points.” That is correct.
“We had a bad season, we finished fifth, that’s also a message.”
