The Reds were held to a draw by Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend.
Roberto Firmino equalized late in what was his final game at Anfield, after Jacob Ramsey opened the scoring with a fine volley.
As a result of the dropped points, Liverpool looks almost certain to miss out on Champions League qualification, which will be difficult to accept given the officiating on the day.
Indeed, Jurgen Klopp will feel as if his team should have been playing against ten men for much of the game after Mings planted his studs into Gakpo’s chest but only received a yellow card.
Gallagher insisted on a red card during an interview with Sky Sports Ref Watch (via Football Daily).
“I think it’s a red card there,” he said. He’s face to face, and he raises his boot after kicking the ball. So, for me, I believe.
When asked whether referee John Brooks needed to use VAR, he responded, “Well, the referee retains all options until he restarts [play].” So, in the absence of VAR, the referee could red card [Mings] himself.”
“The referee can change his mind,” he added. The fourth official, the assistants, could offer him advice. He can ask VAR, “Did I see this right?”
“Because he can tell the VAR, ‘I saw this, I think he hit him there.'” The VAR could then say, “Well, he hasn’t actually, he’s hit him there.” So you might want to go check out the screen.”
Was Mings’ foul on Gakpo deserving of a red card?
Klopp didn’t make much of the incident at the time because he didn’t appear to see it clearly live.
“I didn’t see it back,” he told the press (via Liverpoolfcnews). Was it a red card in your opinion?”
But journalist James Pearce caught the error right away, tweeting: “Mings very lucky that his challenge on Gakpo isn’t upgraded from a yellow to a red by VAR.” Gakpo was caught in the chest with his studs.”
Before adding, “Can’t believe Brooks wasn’t advised to look at the monitor.”
In his column, ESPN rules expert Dale Johnson explained that “there tends to be much greater leniency when it comes to high boots” and that VAR would not intervene because the referee made his own decision after seeing the stud marks immediately after the foul.
By all accounts, referee Brooks should have reached for the red without the assistance of technology.
