‘No,’ says Ally McCoist, who believes no £35 million player will join Liverpool this summer.

Sadio Mane will not return to Liverpool if he leaves Bayern Munich this summer

Mane has struggled since leaving Liverpool for Bayern Munich last summer. After only a year in Germany, the 31-year-old appears to be on his way out in the upcoming transfer market. With that in mind, Ally McCoist was asked on TalkSPORT this morning which Premier League team Mane would be most comfortable with.

“Dear me, what a question that is,” the perplexed pundit said. “I don’t think he’ll return to the Premier League.” It’s been a disaster for him, hasn’t it?

“He was involved in an incident with his teammate [Leroy] Sane. It has not been good for him, and it appears that he will leave at the end of the season. [Joao] Cancelo, by the way, could leave at the end of the season!”

When asked if he thinks Mane would consider returning to Liverpool by host Laura Woods, McCoist responded emphatically. “No, I actually don’t,” he explained.

Mane is planning to leave Munich.

It’s a shame how things have turned out for Mane in Munich. There’s no joy in seeing his decline after leaving Liverpool for £35 million with the best wishes of everyone.

What it does, however, is put a huge dent in the notion that the Reds have been suffering this season as a result of Mane’s absence. These allegations have been rumbling all year, with Paul Merson being a particularly serial offender.

Despite the fact that Liverpool has shown signs of life with a new attacking lineup, Mane has only scored once for Bayern since November. He’s only had one strike in his last 17 games. That is appalling for a player who finished second in the Ballon d’Or standings last year.

For many Liverpool fans, however, this will come as no surprise. Mane had been in a downward spiral since the middle of the 2020/21 season. Last season, his drop-off was masked by a good goal return while playing as a center-forward, but his all-around play and, more importantly, his athleticism seemed to fall off a cliff.

If it hadn’t been for the incident with Leroy Sane, McCoist believes Bayern would have given Sadio another year to prove himself. Fighting with teammates while in such poor physical condition is not a good look.

As a result, German journalist Florian Plettenberg confirmed yesterday on Sky Sports that the Senegalese is likely to be sold.
