Darwin Nunez was present at the King Power Stadium as Liverpool defeated Leicester 3-0, but the Uruguayan was unable to play
It was surprising that Nunez was not named to the Liverpool squad on Monday night, but Jurgen Klopp has explained why.
“Yesterday [Sunday] we trained and he looked OK, and then after training he said he feels something in his foot, in his big toe,” Klopp explained.
“So then we had to make a decision because we’re two hours and 45 minutes away from Liverpool, and we had to make a decision about the squad yesterday, and we did that, so he wasn’t involved.”
“He is now here, I saw him, and he wants to help the cause.”
Nunez, as Klopp suggested, was on the sidelines cheering on his teammates, and he was photographed next to Roberto Firmino, both smiling as they watched the away fans’ incredible singing tribute to the departing Brazilian.
Nunez and Firmino both hope to play before the season ends.
When asked if the Uruguayan would miss the remaining two matches, Klopp replied, “No, I don’t think so.”
“The session did not appear to be like that, but after the session, he felt it more than before, so we need to look into that further.”
With the return of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota on the left, as well as Cody Gakpo’s continued improvement in the middle, Nunez has been short on starts recently.
However, he has continued to have an impact on games from the bench, appearing in all 13 games prior to the trip to Leicester.
With the forward still learning English and adjusting to Klopp’s style, a proper pre-season should be beneficial.
