‘I’d be shocked,’ says Paul Merson, who believes Klopp will start an £8 million Liverpool player against Leicester.

Liverpool transfer news: The Reds are expected to sign Mason Mount.
The Reds wanted to bring Jude Bellingham to Anfield this summer, but after reportedly pulling out, the Englishman has since agreed to join Real Madrid.

As a result, FSG has sought replacements, with Alexis Mac Allister at the top of their list.

According to the Mirror, Liverpool is thought to be leading the race to sign the Brighton midfielder in a deal worth around £70 million.

However, he isn’t the only domestic signing the Merseysiders are considering, with the same report mentioning their interest in Mason Mount.

The Chelsea star’s contract expires in 2024, and with no new deal in sight, a move could be on the cards.

Liverpool are currently the ‘favourites’ to sign the attacking midfielder ‘for around £50m’.

Is Mount similar to Coutinho?
When a new signing walks through the door for the first time, comparisons to former players are made immediately.

Normally, they don’t live up to the hype, but with Mount, a Premier League-proven player who has already won a slew of awards, you can’t go wrong.

In fact, despite his hefty price tag, this would be a brilliant piece of business, as well as a statement of intent from Liverpool as they look to turn things around next season.

What better way to do so than to sign a player who resembles a certain Philippe Coutinho?

The Brazilian is well past his prime, having scored just once for Aston Villa this season, but he was one of the best around during his time at Liverpool. Indeed, the playmaker scored 54 goals in 201 games, while also dishing out 45 assists.

Perhaps his best spell in England came in the final six months before his move to Barcelona, when the 68-cap star scored 13 goals in his first 14 Premier League appearances.

Since then, there has arguably been a tail of woe, with Liverpool arguably still missing his services, despite having the likes of Mo Salah and co.

In 2021, writer Josh Williams stated, “Liverpool have been without a player who can switch between midfield and attack since Coutinho, like Mount or KDB.”

As a result, in Chelsea’s star, Klopp may have found a player capable of breaking those lines and finding pockets of space in which to create and score.

The England international hasn’t had the best season, scoring just three goals in 35 games, but like Coutinho, he can score and assist on a regular and consistent basis.

Last season, the 24-year-old scored 13 goals and assisted on another 16, setting a new career high.

There are more parallels to be drawn between the two silky technicians, who are capable of operating in central areas or from afar.

There have been few better in this country in their position in the last decade or so. Of course, there will always be David Silvas and Kevin De Bruynes in the world, but Mount is a clutch player who is still underappreciated.

Such a figure would be ideal for Klopp, who is looking for dependable operators to get Liverpool back on track next season. With the Coutinho comparison whetting the appetite for what’s to come, the Three Lions midfielder would be a wise acquisition. Consider him alongside Mac Allister; what a sight that would be for fans next season.

The Reds have been used to turgid displays from their central players this season, but with those two players, they’d be incredibly well set.
