Willian, a Fulham winger, recalled his time in English football in an interview with Premier League Brasil
When telling the story of leaving Anzhi to move to the Premier League, he revealed that a few clubs were trying to sign him at the time, including Liverpool.
Willian claimed that the Reds were competing with Tottenham Hotspur for his signature in 2013. And it was his desire to relocate to London that persuaded him to decline Liverpool.
“When I went to London, Liverpool and Tottenham were both interested.” I was negotiating with both of them, not with Chelsea. And my heartfelt desire was to visit Chelsea. Both of them made offers, and because I wanted to stay in London, I chose Tottenham,” Willian told Premier League Brasil.
“Chelsea then made an offer 45 minutes into the second half.” And I didn’t hesitate. With all due respect to Tottenham Hotspur, who are also a fantastic club, my dream was to play for Chelsea.”
Willian joined Chelsea from Anzhi in 2013 for €35.5 million. He was at Stamford Bridge for seven years and made 339 appearances.
The winger then left Chelsea for Arsenal on a free transfer in 2020, and a year later returned to Brazil to play for his childhood club Corinthians once more.
He only returned to England last summer, signing with Fulham, where he has five goals and four assists in 27 appearances.
