Vitor Roque, a reported Liverpool target, is expected to leave Brazil in the coming months

Roque is one of Brazil’s brightest prospects, having broken into the Cruzeiro team at the age of sixteen. The forward, who is now eighteen and plays for Athletico Paranaense, has been linked with a number of European clubs.

Liverpool has reportedly met with his entourage during a recent visit to England. However, they are not considered favorites to sign Roque. Barcelona, according to Fabrizio Romano this morning. Regardless, the Catalan’s precarious financial situation may open the door for other suitors.

“Barcelona remains Vitor Roque’s top priority.” “He dreams of a move to Barcelona, and he’s still hoping for that,” Romano told CaughtOffside. “But he doesn’t want to wait too long; he wants to know his fate in May or June, not at the end of August.” His asking price would be around €45 million [£40 million], but let’s see if Athletico Paranaense will accept a different structure, such as a loan-to-buy agreement.

“The timing is critical for Barcelona, but there is also a problem with Financial Fair Play – Barca still doesn’t know how much they can invest.” This could open the door for English clubs to compete.”

Liverpool to re-enter the South American market?

When Barcelona is looking for young South American talent, it usually only goes one way. A move to Barcelona or Real Madrid is a boyhood dream for many prospects from the continent.

Understandably, English and other European clubs haven’t always held the same allure.

However, in recent years, that perception has begun to shift. Talents from South America have now begun to be signed directly by Premier League clubs, possibly following Brighton’s lead.

Liverpool haven’t quite found their feet in that regard yet. Sebastian Leto, who left Lanus in the summer of 2007, is the last player to have moved directly from South America to Liverpool. He joined from Gremio in the same transfer window as Lucas Leiva.

The Reds had previously delved into the Argentine market to sign Banfield centre-back Gabriel Paletta. Later that year, they signed Emiliano Insua from Boca Juniors.

It’s been over 15 years since Liverpool bought directly from the continent, possibly due to the limited success of that pool of players. That’s a real pity. Given the success of recent signings such as Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez, they may be willing to give it another go. If they do, Roque will not be the cheapest option available, but he does appear to be a viable option. Let’s see where he goes.
