It cost £3.5 million and is now worth 78% more: Liverpool struck gold on a gem with “outstanding speed,” according to opinion.

The defender is now far more valuable than when he first joined Liverpool in 2015

Before Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool during the 2015/16 season, the club’s transfer record had been dismal, with only a few gems making up for the countless flops that had joined under Roy Hodgson and then Brendan Rodgers.

Joe Gomez was one of those standout purchases, joining the Reds from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015 for a fee of just £3.5 million, with the 18-year-old highly regarded upon his arrival on Merseyside.

He had only 24 senior appearances before joining Rodgers, but it was clear he was a player with a bright future.

Fast forward nearly eight years, and he is still in the Liverpool first team, while his value has skyrocketed.

The Englishman had to wait until the 2017/18 season to make more than 20 Premier League appearances for the club, but he was about to become part of the greatest Liverpool era since the halcyon days of the 1970s and 1980s.

Gomez would go on to win the Champions League and the Premier League, as well as numerous other trophies, all while remaining an important member of the team. Despite never being one of the first names on the team sheet, Klopp is a fan of the defender, saying back in 2020:

“He’s a fantastic footballer, which is great. He has exceptional speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; and, as I previously stated, good football.

“I really like the package. It was always clear that as soon as he started playing and regained rhythm, everything would be fine – and so it is.”

High praise from one of the world’s best coaches, and despite Liverpool’s struggles this season, Gomez has a Sofascore rating of 6.92/10, ranking him as the squad’s second-best centre-back.

The initial £3.5m outlay in 2015 now appears to have been a stroke of genius, especially given that Football Transfers now values the 25-year-old at €33m (£29m), a 728% increase.

Klopp could certainly cash in on the player after signing a new long-term contract last summer, but given his ability, keeping him at Liverpool may be the wisest move.
