Liverpool will not be looking to sell Luis Diaz in order to bankroll any new recruits this summer
The Athletic were asked whether Diaz could be sacrificed in order to build the Jude Bellingham warchest during a Q&A session with Liverpool fans this morning.
Fortunately, reporter James Pearce put cold water on the idea.
“Even if Liverpool sign Bellingham, they’ll still need at least one other midfielder, and Mount is a viable option if Chelsea sell him this summer,” Pearce explained. “No matter what happens, Diaz is not going anywhere. He’s an important component of Liverpool’s future.”
It’s good to have that one out of the way. There are perhaps a dozen players you’d kick out before Liverpool’s flying Colombian.
There is no possibility of a surprise Diaz sale.
If Liverpool decides to sell Diaz, they will receive a large sum for him. The 26-year-old has been named Liverpool’s most valuable player at various stages since his arrival.
With a move for Jude Bellingham now seeming unlikely, the Reds may be inclined to add to their bank account.
That, in our opinion, would be a major error. Happily, it appears that Liverpool – and, more importantly, Jürgen Klopp – agree.
Diaz has had a very tough season. He’s had to watch the Reds struggle without him despite having just played eight league games. The key word here is struggle.
With any luck, Liverpool will not have to play another game without their No. 23. Diaz appears to be on track to return to action against Manchester City on April 1st, Liverpool’s next game.
Following that, we anticipate the former Porto player to show Klopp what he’s been missing all season. Diaz was undoubtedly Liverpool’s most significant player from his £37.5 million January signing until the end of last season. We wouldn’t be surprised if he did it again. That type of player is simply not for sale.
