Cooper Flagg Is Stealing a Page from Luka Dončić’s Playbook — and Mavericks Fans Will Love It

The Dallas Mavericks may have just found their new cornerstone, and it’s not just because of his size, skill, or résumé. Cooper Flagg, fresh off one of the greatest freshman seasons in college basketball history, is bringing something even more important to Dallas: a mindset eerily similar to Luka Dončić’s. And for Mavs fans still haunted by the loss of their Slovenian superstar, this is exactly what they need to hear.

Beyond the Trophies: Flagg’s True Mentality

At Duke, Flagg piled up accolades faster than defenders could guard him. National College Player of the Year. NABC Freshman of the Year. A 31-3 record capped by a Final Four run. In March Madness, he was electric — averaging 21 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game while showing a knack for rising under the brightest lights.

But ask anyone close to him, and they’ll tell you the same thing: he doesn’t care about the trophies. He cares about winning.

Matt MacKenzie, Flagg’s longtime trainer, put it best in a recent interview:

“For Cooper, his No. 1 goal is to be able to help his team win games. So as long as he can play a valuable role and impact winning for the Dallas Mavericks, he’s going to be happy.”

That single quote should sound very familiar to Mavericks fans.

Luka’s Shadow — and a Familiar Philosophy

During his Dallas tenure, Luka Dončić constantly pushed aside MVP chatter, stating that the only thing that mattered was a championship ring. His willingness to shoulder the team and put winning above personal glory defined his run in Dallas  and now, Flagg is stepping into that same philosophy.

Like Luka, Flagg is wired differently. He doesn’t chase headlines, he doesn’t obsess over stat sheets, and he doesn’t play for the cameras. He plays for the scoreboard. And that might be the single most important quality the Mavericks could’ve hoped for in their next franchise player.

The Perfect Mentality for a Rocky Season

Dallas enters this year with more questions than answers. Kyrie Irving, still recovering from a torn ACL, won’t be available until midseason at best. Anthony Davis, though dominant when healthy, is always a durability question mark. The Mavericks are caught between rebuilding and competing  but in Flagg, they’ve got a rookie who doesn’t need certainty to thrive.

“He doesn’t spend a lot of time getting caught up in individual accolades,” MacKenzie added. “He feels as though as long as he plays his game, lets his instincts take control, and really prepares for the games the way he knows how to, those accolades will work themselves out.”

For a team that just went from an NBA Finals appearance to a Play-In exit, this kind of maturity isn’t just refreshing — it’s essential.

Carrying the Torch Forward

Flagg will never be Luka Dončić, and he doesn’t need to be. But if he can carry the same selfless, team-first mentality while developing his own brand of dominance, Dallas might have struck gold again.

The blueprint is there: Dončić showed Dallas what a superstar looks like when he sacrifices the “me” for the “we.” Now, Flagg has the chance to take that same foundation and build a new era around it.

For a franchise desperate to climb back to the top, Cooper Flagg’s mindset may be just as important as his talent. And if Mavericks fans loved Luka for his attitude, they’re about to fall head over heels for their new No. 1 pick.
