Cayden Boozer Already Turning Heads: 5-Star Freshman Shines Bright for Duke Blue Devils
The Cameron Crazies might not know him yet, but they will soon.
Just weeks into his college career, Cayden Boozer the highly-touted five-star point guard and son of former NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer is already proving that he’s not just another name in Duke’s star-studded freshman class. According to early reports from Durham, the freshman phenom has hit the ground running, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
Leading the Pack
Despite joining a roster loaded with elite talent including international star Dame Sarr, returning standout Caleb Foster, and his own twin brother Cameron Boozer Cayden has already taken the reins in one crucial area: playmaking.
In summer workouts and team sessions, head coach Jon Scheyer revealed that Cayden led the team in assists, outpacing even the veterans and fellow five-stars. That’s no small feat when you’re surrounded by some of the best players in the country.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t just “promising freshman” talk. This is a 17-year-old running the show three months after high school graduation. If Scheyer is already leaning on Boozer to be a floor general this early, imagine what he could be by March.
A Reload, Not a Rebuild
When Duke’s entire starting five declared for the NBA Draft this past summer, fans were understandably anxious. The Blue Devils weren’t just losing experience they were losing nearly all of their production, leadership, and identity.
But now? That panic is fading fast.
Duke’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class might be even more talented than advertised. Alongside the Boozer twins and Sarr, the class also features Nikolas Khamenia, a five-star power forward with a polished inside-out game, and Sebastian Wilkins, a four-star bruiser who’s already earning praise for his physicality and effort.
Even Wilkins the “lowest-rated” of the group is reportedly holding his own and making a name for himself in scrimmages and open practices.
The Boozer Effect
While both Boozer brothers bring star power and pedigree to Duke, it’s Cayden who’s quickly emerging as the heartbeat of this young squad. His court vision, poise, and natural leadership are already turning heads inside Cameron Indoor.
Scheyer has a history of giving freshmen the keys early see Cooper Flagg, Jared McCain, or Kyle Filipowski. Cayden Boozer looks to be the next in line. And with his twin brother Cameron, one of the best frontcourt prospects in the nation, waiting in the wings, this could be the start of something special in Durham.
Mark Your Calendars
Duke’s season officially tips off on Tuesday, October 21, with an exhibition game against UCF at Cameron Indoor Stadium. By then, the Boozer buzz might be deafening.
Until then, the reports keep rolling in: Cayden Boozer isn’t just adjusting to the college game he’s already thriving in it.
And if this is what he looks like in August? Just wait until March.
