Amanda Staveley, co-owner of Newcastle United, has replied to inquiries about whether Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund could sell the Tyneside club in order to buy Liverpool

The Toon director was questioned why they chose the Magpies above other Premier League clubs at the Financial Times Business of Football Conference.

“We didn’t go for the fantastic Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, or Liverpool… why invest billions?” Staveley stated.

When asked if Saudi Arabia would sell Newcastle to buy another club, she said, “I don’t think so,” with Liverpool and Manchester United on the market.

According to the Evening Standard, Staveley was linked with a takeover at Anfield before moving to the north-east.

Staveley reacts to questioning from Liverpool

With Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund already enjoying success in Newcastle, a late relocation to Liverpool was never a feasible option.

Instead, Eddie Howe’s team has developed as a top-four contender, even reaching the Carabao Cup final last month.

The Reds have moved up to sixth in the Premier League table after beating Wolves last night.

They are now only two points behind the Toon, despite having played one more game than their opponents.

If Liverpool is to reclaim their championship challenge, they could benefit from the level of investment Newcastle has lately made in their team.

A summer rebuild has never been more crucial for Jürgen Klopp, but it all starts with receptive owners.

This hasn’t been the case with FSG, so maybe the incoming minority investors will be more generous.
