UNC Legend Quentin Thomas Stuns Fans with Surprise Coaching Role at UTSA—Here’s Why He Made the Jump!

The former Tar Heel is steadily moving up the coaching ranks

Quentin Thomas, who once played for the UNC basketball program, has accepted a position on the coaching staff at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Thomas will serve as both an assistant coach and the director of operations under head coach Austin Claunch. After finishing 12-19 in Claunch’s first season, the Roadrunners are undergoing significant changes, making this an ideal opportunity for Thomas to get experience in Division I basketball—especially since there’s plenty of room for growth in San Antonio.

The American Athletic Conference is no pushover, so Thomas will have to be ready for a challenge. While Memphis is the biggest name in the league, there are numerous tough matchups that could trip up the Roadrunners—or serve as valuable building blocks.

Thomas has worked his way up methodically, starting out coaching at the high school level before moving on to serve as an assistant under head coach Gary “The Glove” Payton—known for facing Michael Jordan in the 1996 NBA Finals—at the College of Alameda.

During his playing days, Thomas was part of a pivotal era in Chapel Hill. As a freshman, he was a member of the 2005 national championship squad and contributed to 123 wins across his four seasons, though he didn’t appear in every game. Primarily a reserve, he earned admiration for mentoring a group of promising freshmen alongside David Noel in 2006, a season highlighted by UNC’s memorable upset of No. 1 Duke on J.J. Redick’s senior night.

Best of luck to Coach Thomas as he embarks on this next chapter in San Antonio!
