UNC Secures Commitment from Gonzaga Big Man Recruit Nyk Lewis — 7-Foot Center, No. 55 National Prospect Chooses Tar Heels Over Power-5 Giants
Chapel Hill, NC — North Carolina men’s basketball continues to build a powerhouse roster, landing a major commitment from one of the top big men in the 2025 recruiting class. Nyk Lewis, a towering 7-foot center and the No. 55 overall prospect in the country, has officially committed to the Tar Heels, turning down offers from several top Power-5 programs.
Lewis, who initially committed to Gonzaga, reopened his recruitment earlier this summer. His DE commitment sparked immediate interest from elite programs nationwide, with schools like Kentucky, Michigan State, Texas, and Arizona all reportedly in pursuit. However, it was UNC head coach Hubert Davis and his staff who made the strongest impression, ultimately winning over the versatile big man.
“I felt like North Carolina was the best fit for me — not just on the court, but off the court too,” Lewis said in a statement. “Coach Davis really believes in my potential, and the tradition at UNC speaks for itself. I’m ready to be part of something special.”

A native of Southern California, Lewis has drawn attention for his combination of size, mobility, and emerging skill set. He’s known for his rim protection, rebounding instincts, and improving offensive game, which includes soft hands around the rim and a developing mid-range jumper. At 7 feet tall with a 7’4” wingspan, he projects as a potential game-changer in the paint at the collegiate level.
His commitment bolsters an already strong recruiting class for the Tar Heels, who have been aggressively targeting frontcourt talent to complement their up-tempo offensive style. With Lewis in the mix, UNC now has a true anchor in the middle — a player who could make an immediate impact as a freshman.
Recruiting analysts have praised the move as a strategic win for UNC. “Nyk Lewis gives the Tar Heels a physical presence they’ve lacked in recent years,” said one national scout. “He’s a difference-maker defensively and his offensive game is really starting to round out. This is a huge get for Hubert Davis and his staff.”
Lewis plans to finish his senior season at Sierra Canyon High School before enrolling at UNC next summer. With this latest commitment, the Tar Heels’ recruiting momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
