Julius Randle Secures $100 Million Contract Extension with Timberwolves

Minnesota locks in key frontcourt piece as they gear up for another deep playoff run.

The NBA offseason is officially underway following last week’s draft, and the Minnesota Timberwolves wasted no time in making a major move. According to reports from NBA insider Shams Charania, veteran forward Julius Randle is set to sign a three-year, $100 million contract extension with the Timberwolves, a deal that will keep the three-time All-Star in Minnesota through at least the 2027-28 season.

Randle, who originally held a $31 million player option for the upcoming season, is expected to decline that option in favor of the new deal. The extension reportedly includes a player option in the final year, giving Randle the flexibility to reassess his future as he approaches his early 30s.

A Kentucky Reunion Bears Fruit in Minnesota

Randle arrived in Minnesota last season via a blockbuster trade that also involved fellow former Kentucky Wildcat Karl-Anthony Towns. At the time, the move was seen as risky  pairing two power forwards with similar skill sets is always a challenge  but Randle’s presence proved to be a crucial addition for a Timberwolves team seeking to break through in the ultra-competitive Western Conference.

Despite some early growing pains and a slow start after the midseason trade, Randle found his footing as the regular season progressed. He eventually emerged as a consistent and reliable presence for Minnesota on both ends of the floor. Over the last 35 games of the regular season, he averaged 22.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists, while shooting efficiently from midrange and making strides as a passer out of the post.

His impact wasn’t just in the box score. With Randle in the lineup, the Timberwolves posted a strong 44-25 record, compared to just 5-8 without him, highlighting just how integral he became to the team’s system and success.

Minnesota’s Vision: Build Around Edwards with Proven Talent

For the Timberwolves, this deal is about more than just retaining talent  it’s about building a championship-caliber core around franchise star Anthony Edwards. The 22-year-old guard has blossomed into one of the league’s premier young stars, and the team’s front office is clearly committed to surrounding him with experienced, high-IQ veterans who can compete now.

Randle, at age 30, is entering what is often considered the prime of an NBA player’s career. He’s been through the highs and lows of the league  from his early years with the Lakers, to a breakout campaign in New Orleans, to leading the Knicks back to the playoffs  and now brings that experience and leadership to a Timberwolves locker room that’s hungry for more.

“Julius fits our identity,” said one team executive anonymously, per local media. “Tough, competitive, and he wants to win. His chemistry with Ant and the rest of the guys developed fast, and we believe in what this group can accomplish together.”

A Changing Frontcourt: What Comes Next?

The move also raises questions about the future of Karl-Anthony Towns, who has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the past year. While the Timberwolves have not made any official statements about potentially moving Towns, the long-term investment in Randle could be seen as a signal that the frontcourt dynamic may continue to evolve.

Whether Towns stays or moves on, what’s clear is that Minnesota views Randle as a long-term piece of their puzzle. His versatility  being able to play both power forward and small-ball center  gives the team options as they continue to shape their roster.

A Well-Earned Payday

This extension is also a personal victory for Randle, who has faced no shortage of criticism throughout his career. From being labeled inconsistent to struggling in past playoff appearances, he’s had to battle perceptions and overcome adversity. But over the last couple of seasons, and particularly in Minnesota, he’s proven he can be a difference-maker on a winning team.

Now, he’s being rewarded  not only with a lucrative payday but with the trust of a franchise betting on him to help lead them forward.

Final Thoughts

The Timberwolves have made it clear: they’re not content with just making the playoffs — they’re aiming higher. Locking in Julius Randle for the next three seasons gives the team a tough, skilled, and battle-tested forward who has shown he can deliver when it matters.

With Randle, Edwards, and a talented supporting cast, Minnesota is positioning itself as a serious contender in the Western Conference. And for Julius Randle, the journey continues this time, with a long-term home and a real shot at postseason success.
