How Pope’s Recruiting Focus Goes Beyond Talent

“Don’t Miss It”: Mark Pope’s Mission to Build a Team That Truly Feels Kentucky Basketball

How Pope’s Recruiting Focus Goes Beyond Talent to Find Players Who Embrace the Full Wildcat Experience

When you wear the Kentucky jersey, you’re not just stepping onto the court you’re stepping into history.

Mark Pope understands that better than anyone.

Now entering his second season as the head coach of Kentucky Basketball, Pope isn’t just assembling rosters filled with talent, height, and athleticism he’s building something deeper. Something cultural. Something emotional. He’s looking for players who don’t just play at Kentucky. He wants those who live it. Who feel it. Who won’t miss it.

The Art of “Not Missing It”

In a candid conversation with Matt Jones on Kentucky Sports Radio, Pope opened up about how vital it is to recruit players who truly understand the magnitude of what it means to play for Kentucky. It’s not just about points, rebounds, and NIL money it’s about heart, perspective, and connection to the Wildcat tradition.

“You could actually come here for a year as a player and miss it,” Pope said. “You could miss the whole thing.”

It’s an almost haunting idea for Kentucky fans someone walking the halls of Rupp Arena, donning that iconic blue and white, and not realizing what they’re a part of. For Pope, that’s unacceptable.

From FaceTime to Faith: How Pope Finds the Right Fit

Talent may get the first look, but it’s fit that seals the deal.

Pope used Croatian big man Andrija Jelavic as a recent example. Jelavic hasn’t even set foot in Lexington yet he’s still playing professionally for KK Mega Superbet in Serbia. But one FaceTime call was all it took for Pope to see it in his eyes.

“It was one particular conversation on FaceTime where I’m talking to him, and you could see him get emotional as he started talking about the possibility of playing at the University of Kentucky. And I’m like, that’s it. This is our guy.”

That kind of reaction, that kind of reverence for the Kentucky experience, is exactly what Pope is chasing. Because it’s those players who will fight for banners, who will bond with the fanbase, and who will carry the program forward.

Building a Brotherhood, Not Just a Roster

Last year’s squad assembled by Pope in mere weeks made an improbable run to the Sweet 16 and left fans believing again. What made that team so special? According to Pope, it wasn’t just their grit on the court. It was their gratitude off it.

“Our guys didn’t miss it. They could feel the love from the fans, and they embraced everything that comes with being a Kentucky Wildcat.”

That feeling isn’t a guarantee. In an era where players transfer as easily as they change shoes, where NIL numbers can sometimes matter more than jersey numbers, Pope knows he needs more than just stars he needs believers.

The Newcomers Who “Get It”

Pope’s 2025 squad is one of the deepest Kentucky has seen in recent memory, with ten newcomers joining four returning core players from last year’s Sweet 16 team. Thanks to more time and a boosted NIL budget, Pope has been able to target not only elite talent but players who embrace what Kentucky is.

One of those is Mo Dioubate, a transfer from Alabama whose family Pope recently visited in the Bronx.

“Spending some time with Mo’s family, they get it too. It’s already so ingrained in him how different this is at Kentucky than anywhere else. He’s not going to miss it either.”

That’s the benchmark now. Not just who can hoop, but who can handle Kentucky. Who can love it. Who can carry it. Who won’t look back a year from now and realize they missed the moment.

More Than Just Basketball

Of course, Pope still values the tangible assets: shooting, defense, length, and physicality. He’s assembling a team capable of contending for titles. But as someone who once played for Kentucky, he knows success here requires something else. Something intangible.

“As the head coach here, running this program, I cannot bring guys in here that are going to miss this. It would feel like I’m disrespecting this place that I love so much.”

Pope isn’t just coaching a team he’s protecting a legacy. And in doing so, he’s curating a group of players who will add to it, not just pass through it.

A New Era That Honors the Old

Kentucky Basketball isn’t just a program. It’s a dream factory. A dynasty. A religion. And as the world of college basketball evolves rapidly around NIL, the transfer portal, and one-and-dones, Mark Pope’s mission remains clear:

Find the ones who won’t miss it.

Because those are the players who will hang banners.
Those are the players who will be remembered.
And those are the players who will truly be Kentucky.
