American businessman Scott Galloway has revealed that it would take an investment of £40 million to become a major shareholder at Rangers
Galloway, who has Scottish roots, previously explored purchasing shares in the club but withdrew after being advised that he might be viewed as an “American idiot” and “the most hated in the UK.”

Speaking to the *Daily Record* on 28 January, Galloway, now a part-owner of Colombian club La Equidad, admitted that owning a significant stake in Rangers was beyond his financial capacity. “I looked into investing in Rangers in Glasgow, but honestly, I’m just not in that league,” he said. “To be a legitimate part of the ownership group, you’d need to come up with between £8 million and £40 million.”

Galloway explained that he had gathered a group of 14 wealthy and influential Scottish-Americans to explore buying Rangers, proposing a £10 million convertible note. However, a Scottish historian friend warned him against it, saying, “You’d be the most hated person in the UK. You don’t know anything about football, and you’d just be seen as an American idiot.” Galloway ultimately agreed, shelving the plan.
Becoming part of Rangers’ board is an attractive but expensive prospect. With a highly distributed ownership structure, key figures such as former chairmen Dave King and Douglas Park hold 14% and 12% of the club’s shares, respectively. While there are shares available—King has discussed transferring his shares to Club 1872, which currently owns just under 5%—many shareholders are reluctant to sell. They see Rangers as an institution with significant potential for growth, which has made it difficult for prospective investors, like Kyle Fox in 2023, to gain a foothold.

Although joining the ownership group of a club like Rangers is challenging, it’s noteworthy that some investors, like Galloway, recognize when the opportunity is out of reach.
