Defender who departed Rangers for £800,000 in 2018 challenged to secure an Ibrox return this season.

Rangers supporters will recall Welsh international left-back Declan John from his brief stay at Ibrox in 2017/18.

The former Cardiff City left-back joined Rangers on loan from the Welsh club and was so successful that the club made the signing permanent six months later.

Only a few months after Declan John signed a permanent agreement with Rangers, the arrival of Steven Gerrard to the club’s management marked the beginning of the end for the defender.

But John could be returning to Ibrox this season after signing a short-term contract with one of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership rivals.

Declan John signed with St Mirren.
Declan John has signed a short-term contract with St Mirren until January, following the controversial dismissal of defender Jaden Brown.

The 29-year-old left-back joins St Mirren after being released by Bolton Wanderers in the summer following a loan spell with Salford City.

It is now up to the former Rangers defender to secure a longer-term contract in Paisley, with Saints manager Steven Robinson pressing John to make an impact.

“Declan is here on a short-term contract with the option to extend depending on how things go,” Robinson informed the official St Mirren website.

“Due to the conditions, we are severely lacking in defensive cover. Declan comes in with a wealth of experience.

“He’s played at some of the highest levels and has previously played in Scotland, so we’re quite fortunate to have him.

“We’ve witnessed his abilities in his first few days of training. He’s a talented child with excellent technical skills, but he hasn’t played much football in recent months, so we need to look into that and attempt to get him up to speed.

“To add to the squad with the quality and background Declan has, I believe we are very lucky at this stage of the season.”

Rangers are scheduled to travel to St Mirren on Scottish Premiership duty on December 26th, with St Mirren returning to Rangers on February 22nd.

It means John will have to sign a longer-term contract with St Mirren if he wants to return to Rangers next season.

Ex-Gers star is ‘delighted’ to be back in Scotland
Declan John returns to Scotland for the first time since leaving Rangers in the summer of 2018 to join Swansea City for £800,000.

However, the defender’s situation south of the border has not been favorable.

John was loaned out to Sunderland and then Bolton while at Swansea, before joining the Trotters permanently in 2021.

Declan John, who has returned to Scotland with St Mirren, is determined to make a difference for the Saints and says he is ‘extremely happy’ to be in Paisley.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be here,” John exclaimed. “It has been a hectic few days.

“I came up on Thursday, exercised on Friday, then went to witness the game on Saturday, which was a huge victory for the boys. I’ve enjoyed it and am looking forward to getting back into training.

“Everything has been so happy once we walked in, and you can feel it in the changing room. It feels like a pretty nice place to be.

Rangers have been informed that they have no chance of signing a star who is “better and better.”

If Vaclav Cerny’s form doesn’t drastically decline, he will undoubtedly be considered for Rangers’ Player of the Year award this season.

With his total figures making for interesting reading, the Wolfsburg has been one of Gers’ greatest sources for both generating opportunities and goals as well as putting them away.

With his performance against St Johnstone, Cerny made it two in his previous two games and increased his season total to 12 goals, including seven assists.

Rangers’ loan agreement does not include a transfer option, and a summer transfer may cost up to £6 million. His contract with the German team expires in 2027 (transfermarkt).

Although he acknowledged that it could be challenging at that kind of cost, Barry Ferguson stated that he would love for the Gers to go all out for Cerny.

Additionally, a former Rangers-affiliated winger is set to go to Wolfsburg, opening a possible way for Cerny.

However, Ferguson’s old buddy at Ibrox doesn’t think there’s any possibility.

Rangers have no chance on Cerny, according to Alan Hutton.

Cerny’s admirer Alan Hutton maintains that he always has faith that the net would bulge whenever the wide man goes through on goal.

He insists, however, that there is no possibility of a long-term agreement this summer.

“If you play Cerny in, he will finish because he has been decent at that this season,” he told the Scottish Football Social Club of Premier Sports.

“They will be unable to sign him.” They are unable to do so.

Although it was clear from the start that Cerny had qualities, Michael Stewart believes he has developed as a player at Ibrox.

“You could tell right away as soon as he came in that he was a good player,” he retorted.

“And in my opinion, he has only gotten better and better.”

Cerny’s remarks on a permanent Rangers transfer
Cerny has talked about a permanent Rangers move in the past, but for the time being he is simply focused on maintaining his shape.

The Czech added, “I understand how football works and that, if the season goes as planned, it can then turn into a positive light.”

“I am aware of the circumstances at Rangers and the potential outcomes. However, I’m not in a position to comment on it at this time. To help the team succeed, I simply need to give it my all on the field.

“My only priorities are football, my family, and Glasgow life, which is busy enough on its own. In any case, I wouldn’t want to waste time worrying about something beyond my control.

Robin Propper has returned to the Dutch press after one outlet revealed the amount Rangers paid for the defender.

There was considerable tension at FC Twente, an Eredivisie team, when Rangers signed Robin Propper in the summer.

The 31-year-old Dutch center-back was seen as an essential component of the Tukkers’ strategy and having just led Twente to a Champions League qualifying spot.

Additionally, Rangers were able to benefit from a provision in Propper’s contract that permitted the team to sign the defender for a discounted price.

One Dutch newspaper has recently disclosed the true cost Rangers paid for Robin Propper this summer, which caused significant annoyance among FC Twente’s players and criticism of sports director Arnold Bruggink.

Robin Propper’s contract was activated by the Rangers.
After captain and chief Connor Goldson left the Rangers for Aris Limassol in the summer, Robin Propper was signed.

After consenting to a stipulation in his Twente contract that would enable him to go overseas on a shoestring, Propper himself referred to the choice to transfer as “weird” at the time.

Rangers is Propper’s first time playing outside of the Netherlands and, given his age at 31, perhaps his final opportunity to establish himself outside of Holland.

“There were already some opportunities to leave the previous year, but Twente didn’t want to lose me,” Propper informed Tubantia.

Twente had the same right. I did specify at the time that my contract needed to have a specific provision if I were to resign.

“That made me feel like I still had control over my career and hadn’t cornered myself entirely.”

Arnold Bruggink elaborated on the provision that permitted Propper to go overseas and abandon Twente, calling the action “crazy.”

Bruggink informed Tubantia, “We prevented Robin from attending a prestigious foreign club last year.”

Next, we spoke about potential scenarios that may occur in the future. After that, you all sit down and make agreements.

“A club may leave if they arrive before midnight on July 31st and wish to pay the agreed-upon sum. Currently, he has exploited that. That is the current situation.

What was the cost of Robin Propper to the Rangers?
Following the signing of a new deal by FC Twente striker Sem Steijn, the circumstances behind Robin Propper’s transfer to Rangers are once again in the Dutch press.

One of the most desirable young players in Dutch football is 23-year-old attacker Steijn, who has scored 15 goals in 17 Eredivisie games so far this season.

Arnold Bruggink and Steijn have therefore reached an agreement on a new contract in Holland that will last until 2028, but there have been rumors of a possible transfer clause a la Robin Propper surrounding the transaction.

Since then, Bruggink has informed Tubantia that the new contract does not have a condition like the one that allowed Rangers to acquire the Dutch defender.

The amount Rangers paid to lure Robin Propper to Ibrox, however, has once again been a topic of discussion.

Although Bruggink and Rangers were cautious not to disclose all of the transfer’s specifics, there has been a lot of conjecture.

According to the Rangers Review, the Ibrox team spent about £1.5 million for Robin Propper in Scotland, but the Netherlands presents a completely different image.

According to the Dutch publication Twente Insite, Rangers really spent €3.2 million, or around £2.7 million, to recruit Propper from FC Twente this summer.

How a driven USA player managed to transfer £5.7 million to Rangers while eluding Ibrox

For many Rangers supporters, Malik Tillman is the quintessential one that got away.

If things had gone differently, the 22-year-old offensive midfielder for PSV Eindhoven would have ended up permanently at Rangers after spending a season on loan at Ibrox between 22 and 23.

Former Bayern directors commended Ross Wilson for helping to negotiate an innovative agreement that safeguarded Rangers’ interests over the growth of the young American.

And now that Malik Tillman is talking about the possibility of a “dream” return to Bayern Munich, Rangers could be getting even another reward.

Malik Tillman has already cost Rangers £2.2 million.
Malik Tillman had a successful, although not particularly memorable, season while on loan at Rangers, helping the team earn a Champions League berth for the first time in twelve years.

The offensive midfielder has a £5 million buy option with Rangers, which the team would exercise at the end of the current campaign.

But as part of a pre-arranged buyback provision, Bayern would then “hit a number straight back,” as revealed by Michael Beale, the Rangers manager at the time.

Rangers are said to have made about £1 million from the whole deal.

Then, with a £12 million buyout option, Bayern would loan Malik Tillman to PSV, where he assisted in eliminating Rangers from the Champions League qualifying round.

Rangers made a cool £1.2 million from the agreement, or 10% of the transfer cost, when PSV triggered this in the summer.

Rangers would receive another payout for Bayern’s “dream.”
Rangers may soon get an additional payment in addition to the £2.2 million they have already received for their assistance in developing Malik Tillman.

This is due to Bayern’s inclusion of an astounding £35 million repurchase fee in the agreement that brought Tillman to the Netherlands.

According to the Rangers Review, the Ibrox team will be entitled to a further 10% of any transaction, or £3.5 million, should Bayern decide to proceed with the move. This would bring the total sum recovered to £5.7 million.

The admission that it is Tillman’s “dream to return to Bayern Munich one day” is part of it.

The US international maintains that he is content at PSV Eindhoven and will not depart during this transfer window, even if Rangers may have to wait for any Tillman paycheck.

“They told me that they were confident in my skills on the ball when I was at Bayern Munich, but that it needed to be more aggressive,” Tillman said.

That I needed to win more duels and second balls, battle for every ball more frequently, and recover more lost balls.

I was informed that I would not yet be able to play for their first team. However, I want to visit Bayern again in the future. Even so, I am aware that they already have excellent players.

My mother and many of the individuals who have followed me for years reside in Bavaria, where I grew up. The provisions of my PSV contract are well known.

However, I have no plans to leave PSV during this transfer window. I fit in at the club.
