A £4.2 million baller is the most coveted player at Rangers, indicating their new priority position.

It might seem odd to claim that Rangers are close to becoming a strong team under Philippe Clement, but the evidence is there if you look closely.

Ibrox remains a fortress, the team ranks eighth in the Europa League standings, and Clement has come frustratingly close to winning the last two domestic trophies.

While winning is ultimately the goal, football often hinges on small margins, and one of Rangers’ biggest challenges is a lack of squad depth.

### Rangers’ Priorities for the January Transfer Window

In essence, Rangers have the foundation of a good team but lack squad quality. Resting key players like Vaclav Cerny significantly weakens the side.

The same issue arises if Nicolas Raskin is unavailable, while John Souttar’s injury has clearly disrupted the defense.

Hamza Igamane and Danilo provide rotation options, but the contrast in performance when Cyriel Dessers plays is stark.

Another area of concern is the No. 8 role, currently filled by Mohamed Diomande. The Ivorian midfielder has regained form recently, but when he has an off day or needs a rest, Rangers lack a viable alternative.

Kieran Dowell and Connor Barron have been used in this position, but neither offers the ball-carrying ability, creativity in the final third, passing range, or press-resistance required for the role.

Addressing this issue must be a top priority for Director of Football Nils Koppen.

### Who Should Rangers Target for the No. 8 Role?

The challenge is offloading underperforming players like Kieran Dowell and Jose Cifuentes, both of whom remain on the payroll.

If Rangers can move them on, targeting Romanian international Darius Olaru should be at the top of their list.

Valued at £4.2m, Olaru has been linked with Rangers in the past and is currently at odds with FCSB. His very public fallout with the club suggests his departure is inevitable.

The 26-year-old boasts impressive numbers this season, with 15 goals and seven assists in 30 appearances. His versatility allows him to play either in a deeper midfield role or as an attacking playmaker.

Olaru’s arrival would inject much-needed quality into Rangers’ midfield, offering attributes that Clement currently lacks in his squad. His signing could be the key to addressing the depth issues that have held Rangers back.
