Rangers are aiming for a £9 million defender as they look for a quick deal to address the most recent injury blow.

Rangers are reportedly targeting Ivorian defender Bamo Meite as a quick solution to their growing injury crisis, following the latest setback to Dujon Sterling, who picked up an injury in the match against Hibernian.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement is said to be seeking an immediate fix for the team’s defensive woes, which have escalated in recent weeks. Sterling’s injury, the latest in a series of defensive blows, came after key players like John Souttar, Leon Balogun, and Neraysho Kasanwirjo were already sidelined. With only Robin Propper available as the senior natural centre-back, Clement has turned to the transfer market to find reinforcements. This move is in line with his December comments, where he acknowledged the need for additional defensive cover.

According to reports from France, Meite, who was linked with Rangers in the summer, has once again emerged as a potential target. The 23-year-old defender, who joined Marseille from Lorient in a €10.5 million (£8.7 million) permanent transfer after a successful loan spell, has struggled for playing time at the French club. As a result, a loan move in January is now being considered.

While Meite had initially stayed at Marseille to compete for a starting spot, limited game time—having only made three substitute appearances—may now prompt a change. Rangers are reportedly interested in a ‘dry’ loan deal, meaning without an option or obligation to buy, while Marseille is seeking guaranteed payment for any potential loan move.

With the injury to Sterling adding urgency to his search, Clement is likely to accelerate efforts to bring in a new defender, making a deal for Meite more likely to move forward.

Stephen McGown declares that “Clement is a goner,” and Stewart will make the Rangers call.

Stephen McGowan acknowledges that in order to appease Rangers supporters, Patrick Stewart must fire Philippe Clement

The Daily Mail journalist has rendered judgment on the Belgian’s tenure at the club, given the formidable job the Gers face in trying to regain the top spot in the standings. The Ibrox team is currently 15 points behind their fiercest rivals, Celtic, in the SPFL.

“Forget all the schtick about young squad, period of transition, and the need for two or three transfer windows to get things right,” McGowan wrote on January 11.

Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart will provide a media briefing, as promised by Philippe Clement. And now, the only thing the new CEO can say to calm a furious fan base is that Clement is no longer there. Nothing else will do.

“It’s hard to put a pretty face on a pig that has lost £17.2 million and cut the wage bill.”

Philippe Clement is unable to stay with the Rangers.

McGowan is correct; Gers supporters are tired of being misled.

Their top executive’s courageous choice to fire Clement is the only thing that would bring them joy.

One may claim that the board just lacks the resources to proceed with the Belgian’s termination, which has been long overdue.

Stewart must make these decisions since failing to fire him would end up costing them more in the long run.

Clement is not the solution for Rangers, and despite several opportunities to prove his point, he has failed to do so.

The Belgian still seems to be in a comfortable position despite the fact that the Gers are presently 15 points behind Celtic, which would normally be enough for any other manager to be on his way.
