Rangers reportedly dispatched scouts to watch in-form Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku last weekend, and Carlton Palmer believes they may have a competitive advantage in the Championship.
Rangers News reports that the Gers sent scouts to observe Poku play Cambridge United at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday, and they were treated to a thrashing as the Ghanaian international took centre stage, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist to enable his team coast to a 6-1 victory.
Peterborough reportedly turned down a bid from Luton Town for his services in the summer, but Blackburn Rovers were one of the most recent clubs to be linked with a move for Poku, according to a report from Alan Nixon on Patreon in late October – before a flurry of activity was reported this week regarding his future.
The newest news comes from TBR Football, which reports that Burnley has joined Rangers in their pursuit of the 23-year-old wide forward ahead of the January transfer window. Southampton and Ipswich are also reportedly interested in signing him since his contract expires in the summer of next year.
Carlton Palmer’s thoughts on Kwame Poku’s Rangers interest.
Carlton Palmer, an ex-England international and EFL pundit, believes Rangers have two major advantages over the competition for his signature, citing the club’s stature and capacity to agree to a deal before other English-based sides.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, he stated: “Glasgow Rangers are the next club in line, and they are believed to have been watching Peterborough United’s talented winger, Kwame Poku.”
“It appears that a summer move is in the cards, as his contract ends in the summer of 2025.
“Peterborough is not a club that is afraid to sell their talent. We’ve seen players leave for high fees.
“In the summer, they lost players like Harrison Burrows and Ronnie Edwards, who left London Road to join Sheffield United and Southampton, respectively.”
“One of the other players predicted to go was Poku, but he stayed and is presently in the finest form of his career.
A magnificent performance this weekend resulted in a hat-trick, which will no likely satisfy fans from the Premier League, Championship, and now Rangers.
“He now has 17 goal contributions in 17 games this season, with ten goals and seven assists.
He’s 23, and the Rangers might go ahead of the market with a pre-contract in January.
“Blackburn Rovers have been heavily linked recently, but we know Peterborough are well-known for player development and selling players for a high price.
“I believe, given his contract circumstances, you expect him to move on.
“Look at who left and what they did. Premier League clubs have signed Sammie Szmodics, Jack Taylor, and others.
“Ivan Toney made a lot of money, as did Brett Assombalonga, Dwight Gayle, and Ryan Bennett over the years.”
