‘Really sad’ – Mark Guidi claims Rangers star must move on in January, with payoff mooted

Mark Guidi has warned Rangers that they must get rid of James Tavernier during the January transfer window because fan feeling has shifted against the captain.

The 33-year-old has had some terrible performances this season, and Philippe Clement’s selection decisions haven’t helped matters, with the captain starting one week and then being benched the next.

The right-back’s performances this season have not justified his continued inclusion in the squad, and Guidi, appearing on the Go Radio Football Show Podcast, has urged the Light Blues to cut ways with the defender, despite feeling sorry for him.

“I’ve stated it for a few months now: I believe he should have left in the summer for his own and the club’s sake. “There must be a new captain,” he said.

“They should move on from him. He’s been an excellent servant. He’s 33.

“I feel for him, but the Rangers are greater than any individual player. And this is a problem that the Rangers must solve, whether they have to pay out his contract or not, and I believe he must leave in January for everyone’s sake. And then Rangers fans can move on as well.

“I think it’s really sad to see a number of Rangers fans, they’ve really turned on him and it’s not pleasant to see that.”

Rangers should move on from James Tavernier.
Tavernier has been a dedicated servant at Rangers for many years, but every player must leave the club at some point, and the right-back’s time at Ibrox appears to be coming to an end.

While the 33-year-old is still a valuable offensive asset for the Bears, his defensive performance falls short.

Clement has attempted to give other full-backs a chance, but the Belgian has relied heavily on his captain in most games, and his performances have disappointed fans.

It’s not as if the former Monaco manager doesn’t have options for starting ahead of Tavernier, which just adds to the confusion.

Dujon Sterling was superb in the Europa League, starting in a 1-1 draw against Olympiacos on November 7 and impressing in a 1-0 win against Hearts on November 10.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo has also shown tremendous promise and has caught the eye on multiple occasions throughout the current campaign.

Clement appears to be sticking with Tavernier solely because he is the captain, but this should not influence whether or not he should be in the team.

The Light Blues are currently dealing with a number of challenges, the most pressing of which is the uncertainty surrounding the head coach. If not in January, it would be sensible to part ways with the club captain before the start of the next season.
