Glasgow City ‘eager’ for ‘tough’ top-of-table showdown with Rangers

City can go top of the league if they defeat Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday.

Glasgow City manager Leanne Ross says her team is looking forward to the challenge of facing the SWPL league leaders at Ibrox this weekend.

Rangers will host the game at their men’s stadium in Glasgow’s southside on Saturday, pitting first against second.

Ross leads her team into the game knowing that a victory might propel them beyond Jo Potter’s squad at the top of the standings.

Rangers have started the league season in good style, with eight victories and one draw in nine games and a stunning 55 goals.

However, City are closing in, with only one point separating the top two heading into the top-of-the-table showdown.

Ross stated on Friday: “We are thrilled for the task that lies ahead; we know it will be a difficult game, and everyone is striving for a spot in the starting 11 or the squad, so there is complete focus.

“They are all trying their hardest in the sessions because they know we have a task to accomplish and they all want to be on the field.

“We know the challenge that we face when we play a team like Rangers, they are free-scoring, they play nice football, so we know we will spend a lot of time without the ball as well and we are going to have to press really well, but all in all it’s about togetherness and setting up to be difficult to break down so that’s what we will be focused on doing and hopefully we’ll be able to keep a clean sheet on the day.”

The last time City played at Ibrox was in the final game of the 2022/23 season, when a last-minute goal sealed the league title in a thrilling late-day shootout involving them, Rangers, and Celtic.

While that is a good memory for Ross, she knows it will mean nothing come Saturday’s kickoff.

She stated, “That is a happy memory, but memories are what they are, and we must concentrate on the game on Saturday.” It will be an entirely different game, with different players on both sides and a distinct meaning for the game.

“So, yeah, as much as it’s nice to look back at winning the league at Ibrox, it doesn’t really mean anything towards this game on Saturday.”
