‘Basically impossible’: Glasgow bistro cherished by ex-Rangers star is closing

A Glasgow cafe is closing after the proprietor said it was ‘essentially impossible’ to remain operating

Andina Coffee specializes in Colombian-roasted coffee, having opened on Duke Street in Dennistoun over five years ago and expanded to Argyle Street in Finnieston in August 2022.

Ex-Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, who frequented the Finnieston establishment for a taste of his hometown and was present to celebrate its launch, gave it his seal of approval.

Now, owner Maria has informed customers that mounting costs have made it impossible to operate both stores, and the Finnieston location will close.

She remarked, “Finnieston, with a heavy heart, it’s time to call it quits.

“We tried our hardest to make things work, but with costs rising so quickly, it’s almost impossible to manage a business like Andina.

“I am delighted to say that I did my best, but things do not always work out.

“Finnieston, thank you very much for welcoming us, enjoying our coffee, and keeping us going for two years.

“We will focus our attention on wholesale and should you be interested please let us know.”

Maria told her regulars that they could still get their caffeine fix at the Duke Street location, and requested if people could spread the word to keep the shop ‘afloat’ because they are “not as busy as we were at some point”.

She went further: “We hope to see you at Dennistoun and as everyone says, one door closes but I’m sure another great one will open up.”

Customers and friends expressed their disappointment at the news, with one stating, “Finnieston won’t be the same, you did amazing, and I am so proud of you.”

Another said, “Aww, sending you lots of love, Maria.”

A third person said, “Sad to read this.”
