The Minnesota Vikings trade for running back Cam Akers for the second straight year, sending a late-round pick to the Houston Texans.

The Minnesota Vikings have traded for running back Cam Akers for the second consecutive season. On Tuesday, they agreed to trade a late draft pick to the Houston Texans in order to improve their running back depth

This deal is contingent on Akers passing a physical exam. In return for Akers and a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2026 draft, the Vikings will provide the Texans with a conditional sixth-round pick.

Akers was picked in the second round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, when Kevin O’Connell, the Vikings’ current coach, was offensive coordinator.

On September 20, 2023, Akers was traded to the Vikings by the Rams. He recorded 138 running yards and 70 receiving yards in six games before sustaining a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.

This year, Akers joined the Texans after exploring a return to the Vikings. He gained 147 rushing yards and 16 receiving yards in five games, filling in for the injured Joe Mixon.

In his five NFL seasons, Akers has 1,728 running yards and 336 receiving yards. He led the league with 67 rushing attempts in the 2021 playoffs, helping the Rams win the Super Bowl.

The Vikings could be without their starting running back, Aaron Jones Sr., this week due to a hip injury sustained in the last game. Ty Chandler is the next in line to take his spot.

Vikings: 3-Time All-Pro Publicly Announces His Desire To Play For Minnesota

Zach Gelb of Sirius XM interviewed cornerback Patrick Peterson on Friday, October 11. Peterson informed Gelb that he is continuing his exercise regimen and is prepared to join an NFL secondary if the opportunity arises:

“I am still training. “I’m still working out because my mind is still in it,” Peterson explained. “It’s not that I can’t physically play or that I don’t feel like I can give my all. I believe I still have enough in my tank to help a team win, but the decision is out of my hands. So, for the most part, I’m doing everything I can to be prepared in case the phone rings.”

Gelb cited a few clubs as potential possibilities to sign Peterson, but he came back to the Vikings as the one he’d most like to see the cornerback join.

“I would like to be there, too, man,” Peterson added. “I adore the coaching staff there. Coach Kevin [O’Connell] — I got the opportunity to create a solid relationship with him over the course of nine months, and it’s just a terrific atmosphere and organization to be around. And fantastic folks to work with on a daily basis.”

After 10 seasons in Arizona, Peterson signed with the Vikings in 2021. Following two one-year contracts with Minnesota worth $8 million and $4 million, he signed a two-year contract worth $14 million with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Peterson was released by Pittsburgh in March and has since been available as a free agent. Here is a glance at his career statistics:
