Liverpool fans and Jürgen Klopp awoke to the news that FIFA would change the format of the Club World Cup beginning in 2025
The famous tournament, which Liverpool won in 2019, pits the winners of the UEFA Champions League against the champions of other continental championships, such as South America’s Copa Libertadores.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has revealed that the new Club World Cup will be a 32-team event, rather than just seven, and will also take place in the summer, rather than December, as is customary.
We feel Klopp will be enraged after receiving the news.
WHAT’S THE DEAL?
Well, the £307,692-a-week man has frequently complained about the fixture list.
Klopp grumbled that Liverpool will be kicking off the 2019/20 Premier League season despite playing the Champions League final just weeks before, the last game of the 2018/19 campaign.
Now, Klopp will see his usual pre-season preparations ruined from 2025 onwards due to the new format of the FIFA Club World Cup, which we expect him to be angered by.
The 55-year-old often loses key players to injuries at Anfield, and given the importance of pre-season in professional football, the new FIFA Club World Cup could lead to even more fitness issues.
The German was particularly dissatisfied with the timing of this season’s FA Community Shield, as his Liverpool team was once again involved in the final game of the previous season.
Now, Klopp’s regular pre-season preparations will be ruined beginning in 2025 owing to the new FIFA Club World Cup format, which we expect to irritate him.
The 55-year-old frequently loses key players to injuries at Anfield, and considering the importance of pre-season in professional football, the new FIFA Club World Cup could exacerbate the problem.
Jamie Carragher has already rushed to Twitter to complain about Infantino’s decision, labelling the move as “stupid” while also stating that players are “being treated like livestock” by footballing groups.
Klopp has yet to formally comment on the news, but we believe he will share our sentiment.
Like the ridiculous idea of @FIFAWorldCup every two years, this is another one from Infantino. Players need rest at some point, they are getting treated like cattle. FIFA hate the CL & want something similar themselves.
European clubs should boycott it. https://t.co/YHdbAx8rna— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) December 16, 2022
LIVERPOOL AND KLOPP MAY NOT PARTICIPATE
Apart from the customary seven teams, Infantino is yet to decide who he wants to take part in his proposed 32-team FIFA Club World Cup.
If Liverpool is chosen, we wouldn’t be surprised if Klopp organizes a boycott of the event, as Carragher stated above.
After all, the fixture schedule is already jam-packed And Infantino’s announcement has been, to put it mildly, unpopular thus far.
